Rilus M. Dana, Esq.
I enjoy helping people solve their problems and accomplish their wishes.
Yes, it’s true that I knew that a revocable trust avoided probate from a very young age and long before I truly understood what that meant. Let me explain, I am a second-generation attorney and as a kid, I would sometimes travel with my father as he would host seminars about Estate Planning. I had to sit through the boring presentation, but we got to eat at a restaurant and stay in a hotel so that was fun. I didn’t really learn what a revocable trust and probate were until I started working in his law firm during college as a law clerk.
After working for a law clerk for a couple of years I was hooked and decided that I wanted to be a lawyer. I enjoyed helping people solve their problems and accomplish their wishes. I enjoyed then, and still enjoy now, how practicing law allows a type of creativity and problem-solving in a nerdy tax and law type of way. I was also very interested in the business side of practicing law and decided to study Business Management at the W.P Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. After graduating from ASU I decided to attend law school in San Diego at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, which is where I first meet Ben Embry. After graduating law school I returned to AZ and passed the bar and began to practice law in AZ. After living in San Diego for three years during law school I fell in love with coastal living and took the California bar exam so that I could return to San Diego. I also took Nevada’s three-day bar exam, so I can help Californians utilize the superior laws of Nevada (no state income tax, better business entities, Nevada Asset Protection Trust etc.) After developing a successful Estate planning Law practice in Arizona it was time to get out of the desert and back to the coast. I have remained friends with Ben Embry since law school and in addition to the many law school finals and study groups we attended together, we have also had the opportunity to work together in our professional practices. Ben introduced me to Gordon Sattro, who was working with Ben in San Diego and running a successful entertainment law and business law practice in Beverly Hills. We decided to combine forces and EMBRY DANA SATTRO, LLP was born.
When not in the office I enjoy spending time with my three boys and being outside. I used to enjoy skateboarding but my age finally caught up with me and too many broken bones has forced my skateboarding into retirement, so now I just watch the kids. I enjoy surfing, hiking, yoga.
